We really don’t know how long we are going to live. Some say it’s all about genetics. What do you think? Is it true? No! not at all. There are lots of ways that can really help us live a long and healthy life. I know it’s not easy and possible to follow all of them, but we can at least follow one such way.

The most possible and the easiest way is changing our food habit. The latest research says that our food habit or diet is the most prime indicator of showing, how long we will live. It also indicates whether we are going to develop any kind of life-shortening chronic diseases or not.

In short, we must know and aware of what we are eating. The most important point is the food we are eating must have those essential ingredients needed to live long and healthy.
Here are some foods that our diet must contain.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES:

All colorful vegetables and fruits are packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants inhibit or hamper the oxidation. Oxidation produces free radicals that can damage our healthy cells. It can also lead to cancer and can speed up aging. Thus by obstructing oxidation, antioxidants help us by working as a protective shield to our body. Some examples of such vegetables and fruits are spinach, carrots, tomatoes, berries, plums, oranges etc.

OLIVE OIL:

This is perhaps the best fat we should have. It boosts our memory and helps fight inflammation. It helps lower the bad cholesterol (LDL) without affecting the good cholesterol (HDL), thus, protecting the heart as well.

FISH:

Fish contains fatty acids, EPA and DHA. It can boost brain function and our nervous system. It also prevents dementia and joint pain. The Omega-3 in fish can lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides.

BEANS:

These are the natural nutritional powerhouses. We must add these 3 to 4 times per week in our diet. It also contains fiber, which helps in digestion and also minimizes the chances of diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. It also helps us to lose weight.

NUTS:

It contains cholesterol-free plant protein and other nutrients. It also contains Vitamin E, which helps lower the risk of stroke. But as it contains fat, we must have it in moderation.

MILK:

It contains Vitamin D, which helps the body taking in and use the calcium properly. Thus, it safeguards us from osteoporosis. Vitamin D also lowers the chances of colon, breast, and prostate cancers. Moreover, eating yogurt really helps in digestion.

WHOLEGRAIN:

Learn adding whole grain to the diet. It lowers the chances of having certain types of cancers, type-2 diabetes, and heart disease. It also contains fiber that helps prevent constipation and diverticular disease.

Lastly, other than changing your diet, there are other factors too! You must consider achieving the “Longer Life” mission. Do some exercises, if not regularly, at least five days a week. Stay away from smoking, alcohol and most importantly oily junk foods. After all, it’s your life you have to take care of it. And always remember, a healthy life is always a happy life.

XI JINPING: THE EMPEROR IN MAKING

China, the most populous country in the world, always stays in the limelight of international politics. As we know, Xi Jinping is the President of this powerful country. But the most interesting fact is, Xi Jinping, the President of China, is gradually stepping forward to be the emperor of China. This is because, on March 17, 2018, the parliament of China approved Xi Jinping, one more time, as their president i.e. up to 2023. Even the National People’s Congress of China (NCP) allows him to continue indefinitely as the President after his second time expires in 2023.

China’s earlier political philosophy was of ‘’collective leadership’’. But since he became the Chief of the Communist Party from 2012, he slowly consolidated his power to one-man control. Here, it is important to mention that in China, all the three important posts of the country is held by the President. This includes General Secretary of the Communist Party, Chairman of the Powerful Military Commission and the President itself. This means, there is an unlimited power lying in the hands of the President. Xi Jinping has placed his men in all the key positions even in PLA (People’s Liberation Army).

Voice is raised against this move within and outside the country. Especially, students and intellectuals within the country criticised the move, but all went in vain. As during Xi Jinping’s first term, he was able to bring social stability, as well as economic growth to the country.

INTERNATIONAL POLICIES OF XI JINPING:

Jinping has the ambition to make China a great power. And he is working relentlessly to pursue his dream. China stands firm against President Trump’s policies, especially with regard to the South China Sea, climatic change, economy etc. He laid more stress on military modernization, improving air, sea, space and cyber warfare capabilities. For the first time, China has established a military base abroad in Djibouti on August 1, 2017. At the same time, China is worried about the emergence of the alliance of Australia, Japan, India and the USA, regarding military and economic co-operation. China is trying to influence and handle India and its neighboring countries in a very systematic and diplomatic manner.

EFFECTS ON INDIA:

While China and India’s don’t share a friendly relation; China is trying to keep a good relationship with Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar etc. China has invested heavily in Hamombota port of Sri Lanka, which has been given to China for a 99-year lease. It also seems that India’s influence over Nepal is losing gradually. The recently formed Left Alliance govt led by K.P Oli of the Communist party and Maoist Party is not a good news for India. And as we all know, China played a great role here. Similarly, the ongoing political crisis in the Maldives, the present dispensation has clearly drifted towards China.

JINPING’S DREAM:

Jinping’s dream project, One Road One Belt will ensure China’s road connectivity to the countries of Asia, Africa, and Europe. Presently, more than 70 countries are participants in this project. China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is also progressing very fast. China announced an investment of 60 billion dollars on the project. This will connect Xinjiang province of China with Baluchistan. China had a little interest in Afghanistan, but now it’s trying to play a key role in Afgan peace process.

One must agree that under Xi Jinping’s leadership, China is emerging out itself as a powerful country, next to the US. Today, China is the second biggest aid giver after the US. Jinping is restlessly working to pursue his dream. He is trying to be the one and only global leader to make China the only global power.

Salt is the commonly used white granular substance, whose absence will surely make our life miserable and tasteless. But I believe, many of us don’t know the history and importance of it. We only know, its chemical name is sodium chloride, it’s very cheap and commonly found. But believe me, it’s more than that.

Salt has an awesome, amazing and splendid past. It was worth more than gold. During the time when the Phoenicians ruled the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding areas, it was regarded as one of the most precious commodities. Even its value did not decline when Romans came to power. In the earlier times, it was even used as a trading commodity due to its indispensable value. The slave traders of Greek used to barter it for the slaves.

Salt has been affecting the human life since its discovery, thousand years back. The inescapable value of salt was due to its importance in food preservation. At present, it is cheaper but its value is undoubtedly inexpressible.

There is an interesting fact, our body can’t produce salt by itself; we have to provide it from outside. In its absence, the body becomes chemically imbalanced. As a result, our muscles and nervous system cease to function and eventually we die. We will die anyway, but it’s one of such substances that keep us going a bit longer.

Salt has so many untold salty stories to tell but for that, we have to dig into it. It’s not just a subject of history or science but it’s something with a glorified past, a wonderful present, and an everlasting future. Once The British Government imposed high taxes and prohibited Indians from collecting and selling it. And, thus the smart rulers used it as a weapon to rule. So much of power it had. So many Empires came, ruled, and disappeared, but the significance of salt remains the same. Till this date, salt is not totally tax-free, though it should be. But we are indeed fortunate that it’s not costly either.

SITTING FOR TOO LONG? YOU MAY BE INVITING PAIN!!!

There is a popular saying, “sitting is next to smoking“. It is because when you sit for a long time, your body becomes inactive and thereby increasing the risk of back pain, heart disease, diabetes, depression, and even cancer. People who work in computers, desk jobs and those who study for long hours are bound to face serious health issues sooner or later. It is a time-bomb ticking in your lap, waiting to explode at any moment.

Here are some commonly-faced problems and their solutions,

LOWER BACK PAIN:

Lower back pain is one of such problems. Whether it’s an occasional or an ongoing ache, back pain can keep you away from performing your best. It may be caused by sitting continuously for long hours at a time. Slumping back in your desk chair or slouching forward means your spine is out of alignment. That puts a strain on the ligaments and muscles in your back.

REMEDIES: The length of your back should reach the back of your chair to help you sit upright. Also make sure that your feet are resting flat on the floor, with your thighs parallel to the ground. Exercising on a regular basis can also help. Abdominal exercises, such as crunches, two to three times a week can strengthen your core.

WRIST STRAIN:

Wrist strain is another common problem. Many of us unconsciously develop a habit of positioning our wrist over the keyboard. So whenever we operate on a keyboard or mouse the tendons in your wrist go back and forth. That repetitive motion cause fatigue and tendons may become inflamed.

REMEDIES: Perform the Buddha stretch. Place your fingers and palms together with your hands in front of your chest, fingers pointing upward. While keeping your palms together and elbows moving out, lower your hands until you feel a good stretch in your wrists. Hold for five minutes. When using the keyboard, hold your wrist naturally so that, they‘re floating horizontally in the air – not perched higher than your hands or your hands resting on the desk. Also, get a wrist rest for your keyboard and mouse.

NECK AND SHOULDER PAIN:

Frequent movement of neck and shoulder while working on computer create neck and shoulder injuries. The ache and pain come from placing the computer in an inappropriate position, i.e. too far away on your desk. It causes you to extend your neck and shoulder forward. As a result, it strains the muscles and soft tissues.

REMEDIES: To release a tight neck, try the neck retraction exercises. Standing or sitting upright, keep your spine straight and push your head forward, jutting your chin out as far as possible. Always place the computer in front of you – not angled to the side. Use a chair that has adjustable armrests which allow your elbows to form a 90-degree angle. Good posture is also a long-term solution.

EYE STRAIN:

Staring at your computer for hours at a time can cause eye fatigue. People also tend to blink less often while staring at the computers, which leads to dry eyes and fatigue.

REMEDIES: Every 20 to30 minutes, look at something off in the distance for 20 seconds to give your eyes a break. Your computer monitor should ideally be 20 to 30 inches from you. The top level of the computer monitor should be roughly at eye level.

There are lots of other problems too. But the above-mentioned are four common major issues suffered by many, and their solutions will certainly prove fruitful to everyone.

THE TWINS STUDY: A NASA EXPERIMENT – Space can change Human DNA?

Space travel – though it sounds like a fascinating word for almost everybody, it’s more than an impossible task for a common person. There is a limitless curiosity among us regarding space and its existence. NASA and other different space research centers of other countries and their space scientists have been continuously doing the experiment on this. Many of them even lost their lives, during their research.  As a part of such experiments, Astronaut, Scott Kelly spent a year in space and has returned to the earth recently. And most surprisingly, with a different DNA structure, non-identical to his identical twin brother.

Scott Kelly is an American astronaut of 65 years old and a retired space scientist of NASA. He is a veteran space traveler, who traveled four times to space. He stayed for a total of 520 days in space in his career from December 1999 to March 2016.

The Space Experiment:

This time, NASA did an experiment with Scott and his twin brother Mark Kelly, who is also a retired Astronaut of NASA. Mark is an identical twin with his brother and has the same DNA. NASA has done this experiment by using Mark and Scott as subjects of study. Through this study, they wanted to find out, how long-term space travel can affect the human body or what exactly happens?

This was the final mission of Scott. And the result of the experiment has turned out to be just unbelievable. As it proved that space really brings changes upon us. When Scott returned from space, it was discovered that his DNA has significantly changed. About 93% of Scott’s genes have changed back after landing on earth, and around 7% of his genes have shown a long-lasting or permanent change. This includes his immune system, DNA repair, bone formation network etc.

Ten different research teams presented their preliminary findings last year at NASA’s Human Research Programme 2017 Investigators Workshop (IWS). The recent 2018 IWS has confirmed these findings. NASA explains,”while this finding was in 2017, the team verified this unexpected change in multiple assays and genomics testing. Additionally, new telomere (a compound structure at the end of a chromosome) shortened within two days of Scott’s return to Earth.” NASA said, ’’Scott’s telomeres actually became larger in space.”

The Result:

NASA has some hidden strategies besides the study of Scott’s DNA study. NASA, as well as Elon Musk’s Space Mission, is looking at the possibility of astronauts traveling to Mars. Scott’s stint for one year in space so far simplifies NASA’s plan for long-duration space travel.

NASA says,”Scott Kelly’s one year stint in space is a stepping stone to the three-year mission.” At present, astronauts only spend six months in the International Space Station as standard.”  A journey to Mars take at least three years, the longest time a person will ever be in space.

So, the change in DNA opened a new route for the scientists to think alternatively. After Scott’s study, it is confirmed that our DNA in body radically transforms with unknown effects. Many of us were expecting the first manned Mars trip will happen within 2030. But the human element cannot be overlooked at the same time. Still, we are hopeful. Certainly, scientists will find out some way towards the fulfillment of their mission.

BITCOIN AND CRYPTOCURRENCY SIMPLIFIED

For a long time, I have been hearing about Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency. Perhaps, for that reason, my curiosity to know about these two terminologies has increased to a greater extent. So, I tried to put my nose on to it just to acquire knowledge as much as I could. After a bit research, I have come up with few things that I think I must share with my readers. The advantage that you are going to get after reading this article is, you will have a basic idea about Bitcoin or Cryptocurrency and how it works.

INTRODUCTION:

First and foremost, Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency are two different words. Cryptocurrency is a cryptographed digital currency. It is encrypted with secret codes just to ensure three things, secured transaction, controlled re-creation and verified transfer of funds. It also has two other names which are, virtual currency or alternative currency, this means, it is not a physical currency. On the other hand, bitcoin is just a type of Cryptocurrency. The concept of Cryptocurrency was first described by Wei Dai in 1998. But the bitcoin was designed and created by an unknown figure, called, Satoshi Nakamoto in the year 2009.

HOW BITCOIN WORKS:

Since bitcoin is a digital currency, its transactions and exchanges are completely digital. Now, you may have a question in mind like, how can someone measure the legitimacy of such transactions? Means, you have a bitcoin, and you want to give it to your friend John. Now, how can John be assured that you haven’t already sent it to your friend Harry as an email attachment earlier or you have already made several copies of your bitcoin and stored it on your computer? Or probably, you had put it up on the internet and thousands of people already downloaded it.

To overcome the issue, the creator of bitcoin came up with a solution, which is, Blockchain. It is nothing but a digital ledger. It keeps the records of all transactions that take place digitally. And to root out any discrepancies or probable anomalies and frauds, this digital ledger is not specifically placed in a certain place in a certain computer. Rather, each and everyone present in that Blockchain, manage and maintain that ledger under open distributed ledger system. Anyone can participate in that network. Moreover, one has to be within the system, to be a part of the system or that network. And, by participating and contributing towards the updating and maintaining of the digital ledger or the Blockchain one can receive bitcoin as a reward. In fact, it is the only way to create more bitcoins in the system, which they call it, Mining.

CONCLUSION:

Bitcoin carries a high value, and its value increases day by day. The reason is, less in supply and high in demand. Moreover, there is another reason for its popularity, that is, the identities of the transacting parties always remain hidden. Still, there are debates going on between various groups whether it is useful or not. But with the way the technology is advancing, maybe one day, the whole world will accept bitcoin as a Global Currency. Till then, just wait and watch.

Most people in the world, especially the smokers generally suffer from one common disease called lung disease. This is a very common medical condition among the smokers, which they many time willingly or unwillingly ignore. But before its getting too late, one must think about giving protection to their lungs. Hopefully, there are some ways by which we can safeguard our lung.

If you are a smoker, the most effective way to have better lung function is to do regular physical activities. According to a group of researchers, if we do or indulge in some kind of vigorous physical activity or exercises during our leisure time, it can enhance the lung functions. It proves the importance of physical activity among current smokers, especially with a poor lung function.

HOW DOES EXERCISE WORK:

When we exercise two of our body organs come into action that is the heart and the lung. The lung brings oxygen into our body, provides energy and removes carbon dioxide, while heart pumps oxygen to the muscles.

The lung capacity of an average person can be increased from 5 percent to 15 percent with frequent exercise. You can do any kind of physical exercise but the important point is you must have to follow a regular workout routine. Swimming, walking, running, and cycling are some exercises that one must practice on a daily routine basis. In order to stay healthy, one must do 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least 4 to 5 days in a week.

BENEFITS OF EXERCISE:

If we do exercises on a regular basis, it can increase the strength and efficiency of our muscle function, which results in a lesser requirement of oxygen by the muscle to move and hence, produce less carbon dioxide. Exercise improves our overall physical and psychological well-being. It reduces the risk of developing other conditions such as stroke, heart disease, and depression. Regular exercises also help prevent type-II diabetes.

QUIT SMOKING:

Smoking is too dangerous for our lung. The effect starts with coughs, colds, wheezing, and asthma. But it’s just the beginning. It can lead to many kinds of fatal diseases, such as pneumonia, emphysema and lung cancer. A report says, 84% of deaths from lung cancer and 83% of deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is only due to smoking.

That’s why we should always quit smoking and look after our lung properly. Smoking generally affects our stamina which decreases the ability to undertake physical activity and reach our true potential. If we quit smoking, we will be able to exercise for a longer time which can be felt even as early as two weeks after the last cigarette.

FOODS TO BOOST YOUR LUNG:

Antioxidants present in green vegetables help the body to get rid of harmful toxins. Cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower are such kind of vegetables that help to cleanse our blood as well as our lungs. Tomatoes, carrots, red pepper, sweet potatoes are all rich sources of these antioxidants.

Svalbard Global Seed Vault: The Modern Day “Noah’s Ark”

INTRODUCTION:

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen near Longyearbyen. Some call it “Doomsday Vault”, others refer to it as “Noah‘s Ark” of food crops. It is buried inside a former coal mine on Svalbard, a remote Arctic island in a Norwegian archipelago around 1,300 km from the North Pole. The vault was established by the conservationist ‘’Carry Fowler’’. His association was with the consultative group of International Agricultural Research. Its main motto was to preserve a wide variety of plant seeds covering the whole world.

PURPOSE:

The Seed Vault was opened in 2008 which was designed to withstand a nuclear missile hit. It plays a key role in preserving the world’s genetic diversity. And it’s the home to more than 900000 varieties of seeds. It offers a safety net in case of natural catastrophe, climate change, disease or manmade disasters. Nations like Netherlands, Irelands, Canada, Switzerland; International seed research from Colombia, Mexico, India, Pakistan, and Syria placed their samples into the storage. At present, the vault contains one-third of the world’s most important food crops varieties.

THREAT TO THE SEED VAULT:

But there is a problem which is arising due to global warming. Warm temperature disrupted the environment around the vault. The temperature inside the vault is at -18 c. The permafrost, surrounding the facility will help maintain the low temperature of the seeds, should there be a power failure. But unfortunately, the permafrost which is for its protection, melted in 2016. According to one of the Seed Bank’s Co-ordinator Asmund Asdal, due to the unexpected warmer summer season, the water intruded in the (access) tunnel, which is a major and serious outcome of climate change.

The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet. And Europe is at the moment experiencing a sub-zero cold spell, the North Pole recently registered above zero temperatures, 30 degrees higher than normal. According to the scientists, warm spells like these are occurring with increasing frequency in the Arctic.

The Norway govt. wanted to be sure that the seed vault will be cold throughout the whole year even if, the temperature continues to increase in Svalbard. Therefore, Norway recently announced contributions of 12.5 million dollars to improve the repository in a bid to protect the precious seeds.

THE LAYOUT:

Once you enter, it will lead you to a small tunnel-like room filled with the loud buzzing sound of electricity and cooling systems, which is there to keep a consistent temperature within the vault. To reach the end, one has to pass through the wide concrete tunnel illuminated by strip lighting leading 120 meters down into the mountain. At the end of this corridor, there is a chamber, an added layer of security which protects the vaults containing the seeds of varieties of food crops.

All necessary measures are there to take care the Vault from all kinds of possible atrocities and danger. There is a cabin to remove heat sources from the tunnel, near the site to house all the technical materials that can generate heat. It is mainly to prevent a recurrence of melting permafrost.

Interest for food is the result of the genes that I have got through inheritance. Especially when you grow up among people who are crazy food lovers, you automatically learn to love foods. The place where I was born, Assam, is famous for one horned rhino, tea, and crude oil. But a lesser known fact is that it’s also very rich in foods. Although it falls in North-Eastern part of India where the food culture is generally Mongolian in nature, surprisingly Assamese foods have its own identity and uniqueness. It has some similarities with Bengali cuisines but it stands tall and apart due to its strong indigenous nature.

THE VARIETIES:

The Assamese Year is full of celebrations coming in the form of traditions. And if someone deeply sees, all are somehow connected to foods.The famous three Bihus are celebrated in January, April, and October. Especially, the first two are not only a cultural delight but also a celebration of foods.The famous Laddu (made of coconut extract/black sesame mixed with liquid sugar or jaggery). The Peetha (Rice cake filled with coconut extract or sesame mixed with sugar or jaggery). It undoubtedly brings joy to your eyes and tongue when offered with a hot cup of famous Assamese tea. And there are so many other dishes to offer from sweet to salty from snacks to desserts one can’t deny. These are traditional Assamese foods and are purely vegetarian in nature.

THE NON-VEG MENU: ASSAMESE WAY

 Assamese menu has a lot to offer for the non-vegetarian food lovers as well. Here, in Assamese society, three kinds of meats are very popular, duck, mutton, and pigeon meats. The third one is the tastiest when at the same time being unique and rare. I have visited several places in India but have never found pigeon meat in any menu.

The Assamese cooking style is almost similar to the other parts of India. The use of spices and herbs of Ayurvedic significance proves the charisma of Unity in Diversity one more time. Again, if you are a fish lover, I can assure you that you are just in the right place. The mighty river Brahmaputra that flows through the state and about dozens of small rivers are the home to hundreds of species of fishes. Some are common but many are unique and indigenous. From my childhood days, I have seen, there are few fish dishes which are only cooked and served in this part of the world, like fish cooked with Elephant Apple (a rich source of Vitamin C), fish cooked with star fruit, and freshwater fish barbecued in banana leaves. These are so unique recipes, I would say a must-have for a fish lover.

Lastly, for me, food is a story of never-ending happiness. And the journey goes on with me and after me as well. It is impossible for me to include and mention all the dishes here.
